Reusing Your Sewing Machine -  Absolutely an Awesome Way to Reuse it

Who would have thought that Singer Sewing
Machines aren’t just for sewing!

Singer Sewing Machines are truly amazing, aren't they? You won't believe the versatility they offer!

Last year, I received my grandmother's cherished Singer sewing machine as an inheritance. It's a stunning antique that I've been holding onto, admiring its beauty. I haven't had the heart to use it yet, but deep down, I know this exceptional machine is capable of so much more. It's time to unleash its potential and give it the care it deserves!

A bit of History
In the 1700s, Englishman Thomas Saint receives the first patent for a leather sewing machine, but with little success on how to create them. In 1850, Isaac Singer used the patents of Elias Howe, the inventor of the first lockstitch in the world in 1846, to mass-produce the first practical sewing machines for households.

As they became widely available, sewing machines were in every home, almost. They would be passed down from generation to generation until one of them ended up in my garage collecting dust.

Then I heard about repurposing vintage sewing machines into trendy, everyday furniture, and a light bulb went off. People repurpose everything, from empty bottles (here) and old tires (here) to pegboards (here) and pallets (here) and show them off at their weddings or event. Now, even vintage sewing machines are finding a new way of life. Let us check out six ways to repurpose them! If you have any other ideas on ways to repurpose vintage sewing machines, please share them below. We would love to see them.

This Will Make You Want to Absolutely Try This

6 Ways to Unlock Your Sewing Machines True Potential

1. Create Vintage Tables

Repurposing your sewing machine as a table is a great and easy way to bring it back to life! You can make a trendy nightstand, patio table, plant stand, and so much more that will catch the eyes of your guests. Easily replace the top of the sewing machine with a nice slab of wood that has been stained and finished. Voilá - you have a new, vintage table!

3. Turn It into Dressers

A lot of repurposing ideas take away from the original design, but not with this method! Keep everything intact and turn the sewing machine into a dresser. By removing the machine, covering the opening with a tray or countertop, and adding a fresh coat of paint, you will have a quaint little dresser for your room!

Make Chairs

You probably never imagined that your grandmother’s sewing machine could become a chair, but it can! The intricately designed sides are perfect for the frame of a seat, and it only takes a few simple steps to create something stunning. The repurposed machine would be a charming, decorative piece even if you don’t plan on sitting in it.

4. Create Bathroom Vanities

Does your bathroom need a new look? Well, a fun, unique idea for your sewing machine is to turn it into a bathroom vanity. You might be thinking that sounds difficult, but it’s not! Take the same steps to create a table but cut a hole in the new countertop, add a sink, and attach the plumbing. Now you are ready to wash your hands at your new vanity!

  2. Wow! Lots of ideas and inspiration for up-cycling old sewing machines. My sister inherited our grandmother's Singer treadle sewing machine many years ago. She turned it into a table. I really like the idea of using an old sewing machine as a mini bar or bathroom vanity. Such creative ideas!

  12. Interesting to see so many different options! Have you decided what you're going to do with your Grandmother's treadle machine? My Dad turned one into a table and I have my modern sewing machine sitting on it. My other treadle machine is fully operational, but I use it as a plant stand, no further work required!

    1. Yes, quite a few options. So far, I don't know what to do with it yet. I am still thinking of what would be ideal for it. Do you still use yours? My grandmother was a great seamstress when she was alive. I remembered my aunt would buy the fabric and get her to sew the latest. I would just sit in amazement and watch as she replicated what my aunt wanted... Thanks for taking the time to visit and sharing.
